A little about us
There's a lot of history. Here's a nutshell version.
A pioneer of the PET bottle business, Constar began manufacturing plastic bottles in 1963 as Sewell Plastics. We were a major participant in the rapid growth of two litre PET soft drinks bottles in the early 1980s.
Constar was also a major participant in the introduction of single serve soft drink bottles for convenience sales in the 1990s, as well as the development of the bottled water market. Constar continues to be an innovator in applying PET technology to new packaging opportunities.
The company began as Sewell plastics in 1963, originally as a regional dairy supply company, producing 1 gallon HDPE containers. Purchased by the Dorsey Corp in 1970 when cash infusion allowed growth to other markets.
In 1977, Sewell introduced the first 2 L beverage bottle and expanded exponentially over the next few years. In 1987, Dorsey Corp became Constar international and Sewell plastics became Constar plastics.
When purchased by Crown, Cork and Seal in 1992, Constar plastics became a divisional partner with Obrist, plastic closure Europe and Tredegar, plastic closures, US and as such became part of the worlds largest plastics container manufacturer. The opening of the new William J. Avery technology centre in Alsip, IL in 1994 was preceded by the moving of the corporate headquarters from Atlanta to the headquarters of Crown based in Philadelphia.
In 2002, Constar Int. became an independent company through a 'carve out, spin off' IPO
